“Storytellers Talk Too Much”
Join Irish storyteller, singer-songwriter and author Colin Urwin in this workshop designed to enhance your storytelling performance skills with alternative use of language, voice, music and other simple techniques that will bring a new level of interest and intensity to your practice. Colin will guide participants through some fun exercises and discussions and share a few tried and tested methods that he regularly incorporates into his dynamic and engaging performances. Individual topics for discussion will include:
- showing, not telling – dialogue vs. description.
- heightened use of language – verse / poetry vs. prose.
- enhanced use of voice – singing (NO SINGING ABILITY REQUIRED).
- use of basic percussion and / or musical instruments (NO MUSICAL ABILITY REQUIRED).
- Non-verbal communication – gestures, facial expression, body language.
- use of simple props.
- use of humour – comic asides, spontaneous reactions to audience and external factors.
