Haunting Tales — Wed. Oct. 25th, 2023
Enjoy strange and haunting stories just in time for the Halloween Season. Seattle’s Eva Abram will offer chilling stories from the African-American tradition. Tobey Anderson, from Olympia, will tell spooky traditional and personal tales from her heritage, as well as time living in Southeast Asia. These talented and enthusiastic tellers are sure to induce shivers during this evening of frightening good fun.
“Be careful of what you say. That one has big ears!” Tobey’s aunties would say. Tobey Ishii-Anderson is an avid listener to stories. Her grandmother would start the stories with “Mukashi mukashi… Once upon a time” and Tobey has been held captive with the world of stories ever since. She loves the folktales from Japan retold at family gatherings. From listener to being the teller of stories, she has carried on this family tradition. As a Peace Corps volunteer and then an international school teacher she has lived in various countries in Asia and Europe. Tobey has had the good fortune to gather stories from many diverse cultures. She is a member of the Asian American Storytellers in Action and the South Sound Story Guild.
Eva Abram was born in Louisiana and has lived in Seattle for the past forty years. She received her B.A. from the University of Washington. Eva is an accomplished storyteller, actor and speaker with Humanities Washington. She started her study of storytelling with the Seattle Storytelling Guild and was inspired and encouraged by her first teacher Cherie Trebon. With tellers like Cherie, Pat Peterson and Diane Ferlatte to aspire to, she has continued her pursuit of becoming, always ‘becoming’ a better teller. Over the years she has performed in schools, museums, colleges and libraries throughout Washington. She was also a featured teller at Tellebration and the Forest Storytelling Festival. Eva shares history and culture, she uses folktales from different cultures to show our human connections – our foibles, our curiosity and our humor. At the heart of her stories is this theme “We are all connected; we all affect each other.” She hopes to always leave her audiences with joy and an appreciation of each other.
